Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Construction Industry: Does it Really Matter?
Recently, ASHRAE’s international Board approved a Diversity Commitment and established a Proactive Diversity Task Group with a goal to recommend detailed programs and initiatives seeking to eliminate all forms of discrimination and social injustice, and proactively drive diversity through all levels within our industry.
This led some members to ask “why”?
What role, if any, should professional organizations such as ASHRAE and MCA-Omaha play when it comes to diversity in the AEC community?
This highly interactive, engaging, and thought-provoking presentation will tackle these questions head on:
• Review ASHRAE’s current Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives
• Define terminology – what exactly does DEI mean?
• Discuss metrics, trends, and research
• Encourage a respectful exchange of ideas by utilizing an online platform to ensure privacy and anonymity.
Speaker – Devin Abellon
Devin Abellon, P.E. is the Business Development Manager for Engineering Services at Uponor North America. He has over 25 years of experience in the HVAC and plumbing industries with a focus on high-performance and sustainable building design and construction. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Santa Barbara and is a registered professional engineer in California and Arizona.
He’s an active member of both ASPE and ASHRAE, and serves on the ASHRAE Board of Directors as the Region X DRC, Handbook Subcommittee Chair, and as an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer. He also serves on the ASHRAE Board of Directors DEI Advisory Subcommittee.
